Blockchain and sustainability
These proposals support the CEN/CENELEC Working Group (WG2) on the Environmental Sustainability of Blockchain and Distributed Ledger Technologies. The fellowships supported the WG's purpose of developing a set of European standards for the environmental (climate) sustainability of Blockchain and DLTs. They helped the development of the Technical Report on the Environmental Sustainability Classification Methodology of the Blockchain and DLTs consensus mechanisms, but also to the preliminary research of the new proposed Technical Specification (TS) work item "Environmental Sustainability Taxonomy of Blockchain and DLT" to support as the basis for labelling these technologies and crypto assets according to energy efficiency categories.
The output of these fellowships will also be useful input for the standardisation work at ISO TC 307 Blockchain and DLT WG5 Governance to the development of ISO/WD TS 23353 Blockchain and distributed ledger technologies – Auditing Guidelines in order to include environmental consideration as a key aspect of the TS, as a consequence, they contribute to the European Standardization Strategy to promote European expert developing international standards from the European values. On the other hand, this work will support the high-level European priorities of the double Digital and Green transition.
